I tried to find my way. I worked in the restaurant business and I worked for small enterprises. In high school, I designed and sold my T-Shirts, did art illustration, and odd jobs — sometimes all at the same time!

I had a lot of false starts. A lot of failures. And I was completely scammed out of a profitable business at one point, by dishonest people. I was just too gullible.

I used all my money to buy designer products to look good and feel good about myself and keep up with the Jones's. It did everything the average Millennials did and went broke.

 

I became a brand influencer, using my funds to build someone else's empire. One day my father asked me, "How much are these clothing companies paying you to advertise their products?"

I told him, "They don't pay me, just give me a big discount on the merchandise. I get the merchandise for free."

 

Types of Brand Ambassador Programs There are several types of Brand Ambassador Programs, we will focus on the 4 most common:

 

1. Affiliate Brand Ambassador Commission Program - This type of brand ambassador program is modeled on the affiliate marketing structure. This program involves a partnership between the brand and a few individuals usually influencers, promoters, or bloggers where compensation is a commission payment. The digital product industry sometimes has lucrative commission structures from 40% to 100% of the retail price paid in commission.  This type of brand ambassador program is a win-win for both sides, as both brand and affiliate marketer profit from resulting sales.

2. Informal Brand Ambassador Program (also known as referral program) - The informal brand ambassador program is less structured. Anyone who shows unwavering loyalty or love for a brand can join this brand ambassador program. All they need to do is spread the word about the brand to family and friends.

3. College Brand Ambassador Program - College ambassador programs are ideal for brands whose target consumers fall within the college or university demography. This type of brand ambassador program simply involves a partnership between a brand and enrolled students. The brand leverages the internal connections between students on campus and in study groups to raise awareness for an organization or product, thereby increasing sales. Other marketing strategies include wearing outfits that advertise the brand they represent, hosting on-campus events, handing out product samples, putting up posters, or coming up with ingenious ways to promote the brand they work for. Brands involved in college ambassador programs include Red Bull, Coca-Cola, and Victoria’s Secret.

4. Requirement-Driven Brand Ambassador Program - Requirement-driven brand ambassadors perform certain actions for a brand within a specific time frame. These Ambassadors use their notoriety status to develop the brand. Generally, requirement-driven brand ambassadors are influencers with high content engagement rates. You will find lots of celebrities signing contracts to act as spokespersons to develop the brand.

 

That's when it finally hit me and the light went on. Unless I could monetize my efforts and make 6 -figure income, I would not be keeping pace with other brand ambassadors.

 

The problem:

Consumers are being so overwhelmed with advertising that they feel they cannot trust. One way to minimize making mistakes and avoid buyer's remorse is to turn to people to help them decide what to buy. Providing honest reviews, identifying the pros/cons of merchandise, and a rating are significant to a consumer.

I started looking for high paying gigs without success. And I can tell you...I Hit A Low Point At That Time

I’m not kidding. I got a part-time job at a restaurant to make ends meet. I was trying to do it on my own to avoid asking my parents for more help. I remember having so little money in my pocket, I couldn’t even pay to fill a quarter tank of gas.  

 

I was thinking in disbelief... Surely it's not supposed to be like this..?

I can trace the exact point where it all changed. It came down to one thing...

I discovered how to better package myself to become appealing to sponsors.

But, even then, it wasn’t plain sailing.

Chapter 2: How to Become an Influencer – Knowing Your Strategy

So now you know what being an influencer entails, the next logical question is how you get there!

How do you become an influencer and start making a big splash online?

The simple answer is to create high-quality content that has a consistent and honest “mission statement”, and then to promote that content online.

Often this will mean also mean creating a “personal brand.” That means that instead of using a logo or company name, you are going to make yourself the brand.

 

Creating Your Personal Brand

Personal branding is an immensely fascinating concept when it comes to marketing and one that will be naturally interesting to many people.

Essentially, personal branding means taking your name and your image and turning that into your brand.

This is a way for people to potentially achieve a minor form of celebrity online (hence the mass appeal!) while also presenting an opportunity for businesses to reach a much larger audience in a far more personal and impactful way.

At the same time, personal branding allows you to create more of a direct relationship with your audience – and to be more “human” and accessible. This in turn means you will be more likely to develop actual friends and fans, rather than just customers or clients. This is a FAR more powerful kind of relationship for any business.

Personal Brands Explained

The best way to explain a personal brand is to suggest a few examples you can learn from. Take Tim Ferriss for instance. Tim Ferriss is a prominent creator, an author, a podcaster, and someone who has a massive online following.

Part of Tim’s success comes down to his branding. Notice how you know his name rather than a company. The same goes for someone like Tony Robins, or perhaps Pat Flynn. These are people whose names come first. Elliot Hulse or the Hodge Twins are similar examples, as are many more YouTube personalities.

If you choose to create a personal brand, then the name of your social media account is your name. The things you post are clips from your life. And the business name takes a back seat.

Why it Works

There are many reasons that personal branding works well and particularly when combined with social media.

For starters, a personal brand makes your website and business feel much more personal and it makes people feel as though they know you and can relate to you. That means they’ll feel as though they can trust you and in turn, that means they’ll be willing to buy from you.

The aim is to become a role model and to become someone that others want to emulate. Most of us will base what we wear on what we see in magazines, and what we see celebrities and friends wearing. We are significantly less impressed by adverts telling us that we should wear a t-shirt. This is the power of “social influence.” And it’s massive!

Having a more personal relationship with a brand also makes you more emotionally invested. It means that you’re going to want to see what they do next and you’re going to feel involved in their success. This makes you far more likely to engage with their posts and to be persuaded by what they have to say.

 

Another reason it works is that people love living vicariously. People love getting an insight into the lives of others and this way, your social media will become much more interesting and addictive to follow.

Finally, though, using yourself as your brand allows you to sell the “value proposition.” A value proposition drives the most successful products. This is the “promise” for what your product can do for people. It is the lifestyle you’re promoting and the emotional hook.

By having a personal social media account, you can show yourself living the lifestyle you’re selling. And when you do that, people will be inspired to buy your products.

The 3 C’s of Influencers

Are you ready to step up your game as an influencer? Do you want to join the big boys in your respective niche and attract the highest-paying sponsors?

Then you need to focus on THREE golden rules: the three C’s…

They are…

 

Content

Being an influencer is all about creating amazing content. Whether you’re on Instagram, YouTube, or Vine… it really doesn’t matter. People tune in because they want to be inspired, informed, or entertained and that’s what your content does.

This is also important when it comes to networking, getting shout-outs from other influencers, and finding sponsors. The better your content, the more other people are going to want to be associated with your brand. We’ll address how to do all of this later in the book.

So how do you make amazing content? Again, it’s all about understanding your value proposition. You need to know why your audience responds to what you’re doing and what they hope to gain from following you. Once you can do that, you can tap into that emotional hook and keep bringing them back.

 

Community

Community engagement is absolutely critical for influencers working on Instagram and other networks. These are social networks and the operative word here is social. That is to say that these platforms are designed for communication. If you are putting out content but not responding to comments or messages, then you’re not really using the channels as they were intended.

Start to actively respond to your audience and engage them and they will feel as though they actually know you. This gives them a greater sense of ownership over your brand and of belonging and ultimately, it’s what makes true “fans” as opposed to passive followers. Even friends!

This is also the best way to sell something as an influencer: using what we call the “soft sell.” Imagine that you are selling life coaching for $1,000 per session. Instead of shoving that down people’s throats, you instead post images of you living your best life and mention casually that you offer life coaching. People will contact you to ask about it, at which point you spend time talking to them, getting to know them, and understanding if you can help them. Only then do you outline the program you offer and the price, at which point they’re hooked. This is how, as an influencer, you can successfully sell truly “big ticket” items.

 

Connection

Finally, you need to connect. Success as an influencer is as much about whom you know like anything else and if you can work alongside the other big influencers in your niche then it will give you a leg up that helps you get to the top that much faster.

Niche marketing

Don’t try to reinvent the wheel, or strategize some way to approach the market that hasn’t been done before. Instead, you should focus on following existing strategies that have been proven to be successful. Then, add your own special and unique touch to your approach.

 

For example, if you research the low carb diet niche you’ll find countless workout guides, membership sites, and weight-loss challenges. But what if you came into the market with a strong focus on helping people lose weight with low carb-high fat recipes, instead of workouts?

To stand out from the crowd, you want to follow trends while also creating your own! Being able to present the same old topic with a fresh, new perspective is all it takes to garner attention and get people excited about what you have to offer.

 

One fatal mistake that new influencers often make is trying to be all things to everyone. As the saying goes, a jack of all trades is a master of none, and this is especially true when it comes to building a strong presence in your market.

Instead of covering all topics in your niche, choose 1-2 and focus on just those. Sure, you can occasionally post an off-topic article, but by large, your content and overall engagement should be geared towards very specific topics.

This is how you create a brand where you’re known as an expert. Again, you want to become the go-to person in your niche, and to do that you need to choose a very specific topic and maintain a strong focus on creating content that satisfies a targeted audience. You can branch out later.

 

Bringing something new to the table is important to stand out from the crowd, and the easiest way to do that is to choose a topic and then create as many different channels around that market while offering something fresh.

For example, if you discover that most YouTubers in your market are creating formal videos that take a serious approach, consider creating a channel that offers candid conversations and off-beat interviews and content.

Tell personal stories, share your experiences, and don’t be afraid to open up to your audience. People can relate to that because it shows them that you once dealt with the same issues and struggles that they are now facing and that you know how to overcome them.

Taking a personal approach also makes you more approachable which will result in more people coming to you for content, advice, and leadership. Sharing stories of personal growth will connect you to your core audience.

Put your own spin on common topics! Your own personal stories are uniquely yours, so while you’re covering subject matter that’s been done many times before, you’re still able to create a strong brand with a clear message that will resonate with your audience.

Offering a unique viewpoint while sticking to the topics that are proven to be popular within your niche is the easiest way to build a stand-out brand that captures attention.

 

Creating Your Base

One of the easiest ways to become an influencer in your market is to choose your platforms carefully. Rather than try to build a presence across every available platform, you should choose just one at a time and concentrate on building an audience that’s highly engaged.

Besides, it’s hard to position yourself as an expert in a niche if you’re struggling to find the time to be everywhere. Grow your audience in one central platform first, and then expand your outreach as you find the time and learn ways to automate your marketing.

Choosing your primary platform can be tricky because it will be based on where your audience congregates. This means you’ll need to do some more research to figure out where the majority spend their time.

Start by evaluating the different social networks to determine which one is the most popular in your niche. Chances are, you’ll find people across the board, but one platform should stand out to you. Go with that one.
